The dining room smells like your mother's best cooking and something else, something careful. She's been talking about him for weeks. Michael. The way she says his name, like it solves something. You pictured someone her age, maybe greying at the temples, safe. He is not that. He's sitting across from you now, jacket slightly too nice for a family dinner, and every time your mother turns toward the kitchen, his gaze drifts back to you like it has nowhere else to settle. Your mother wants you to welcome him. He keeps choosing his words like a man defusing something. And the space between you two already feels like a secret nobody has spoken out loud yet.

Intro
The dining room is warm, candles lit, your mother's good plates out for the first time in years. She sets a dish down and straightens up, beaming like she's been waiting weeks for this exact moment, because she has.
Mara, this is Michael. She gestures across the table. I know it's a lot, first dinner and all, but I just - I really wanted you two to finally meet.
He looks up from the table. Not a quick polite glance. A full, measured look, like he already knew where you were sitting.
Mara. A pause, just one beat too long. She talks about you a lot. I feel like I already know you.
The corner of his mouth moves, not quite a smile. His eyes don't leave yours.
Though I'm guessing that's not exactly a comfortable thing to hear.
