His skin is noticeably sickly green a change attributed by his "immortalist" lifestyle and gradual decomposition. He retains his misshapen, multi-broken nose and mismatched eye, a darkened red pupil in his right eye. He has long, pointed fingernails, uneven spiked teeth, and a black mop-top hairstyle that often hides his eyebrows. His standard "uniform" consists of a grey or black sweater, blue or grey jeans, Cuban high-heel boots, and an inverted cross necklace intense narcissism, heightened cruelty, and sadistic behavior, particularly toward bandmate 2-D. He operated as a self-centered, hedonistic frontman, often using abusive tactics to maintain control while displaying immense pride, laziness, and a cynical, "rent-a-quote" attitude. 38
Russel is consistently shown as a large, heavily built African-American man. His eyes remain completely milky white with no visible pupils, a permanent side effect of being possessed by the spirits of his dead friends. He wears a white T-shirt with green selves and collar and grey jeans widely considered the "backbone" and "moral compass" of Gorillaz, serving as a grounded, intellectual counterweight to Murdoc's chaos. Unlike his more erratic bandmates, Russel is characterized by his eloquent speech, deep intelligence, and strong sense of discipline. 29
Her hair transitioned from pure black to a dark purple or indigo tint. It was kept in a short, layered bob, warm olive skin, black eyes, white shirt just past her belly button with blue hems on the short sleeves and a basketball in the middle, white knee length skinny jeans, black sneakers. confident, pensive, and creative teenager, largely directing the band's creative vision. As the primary songwriter and creative force of this era, she was introspective, tech-savvy, and a mature, intelligent voice among her bandmates 14
2-D eyes pitch black due to 8-ball fractures. In close-up shots during this phase, they occasionally appear dark red. His hair is a messy, azure blue with messy spikes, a white T-shirt short short sleeves with red hems, a big red 3 in the middle, skinny jeans, and black boots "happy-go-lucky" yet deeply naive and passive vocalist, often described as sweet but dim-witted 26
The Kong Studios common room is bathed in the pale, flickering blue light of a CRT television. It’s a slow Phase 2 morning, and the air smells like a mix of stale coffee and Russell’s heavy cocoa.Murdoc is sprawled across the cracked leather sofa, boots up on the coffee table, while Russel sits beside him, arms crossed, both of them squinting at a grainy news report about "the next big thing" in the music charts. Murdoc lets out a sharp, jagged cackle, pointing a spindly finger at the screen as the news anchor praises a clean-cut new boy band.Down on the rug, tucked away from the cynicism on the couch, Noodle and 2-D are sitting cross-legged on the floor. 2-D is distracted, absentmindedly picking at a loose thread on his sleeve, while Noodle has a map of the studios spread out between them, marking secret passages with a neon green highlighter. The chaos of the world outside the window feels miles away from this weird, quiet bubble.

"Look at 'em, Russ! Pure plastic! They wouldn't know a bass hook if it bit 'em on the—
Russel doesn't even move his head, just shifts his eyes toward Murdoc with a look of deep, practiced exhaustion. He takes a slow, deliberate sip from his mug before answering in that low, gravelly rumble.
"Man, shut up. You said the same thing about the last three bands, and then I caught you humming their chorus in the shower yesterday. Just 'cause they didn't sell their souls in a graveyard doesn't mean it’s the end of the world."
He gestures vaguely at the screen with his chin.
"Besides, the kid on the left's got a decent pocket. Better than that drum machine you tried to replace me with last week, anyway."
Down on the floor, the map of Kong Studios is forgotten for a second. 2-D has been staring blankly at Noodle’s neon highlighter for so long he’s practically gone into a trance.Suddenly, Noodle reaches over and—without looking up from her map—snaps her fingers right in front of his face. 2-D jumps, his heels skidding on the floor.
The low hum of the morning news is the only thing filling the silence until 2-D leans over, squinting at the screen. "D’you think they’ve got real hair, Murdoc? Or is it like… stuck on with spirit gum?"
Murdoc doesn't even look down from the sofa. "It’s plastic, you muppet. Vacuum-sealed and polished by a team of accountants. Probably don’t even breathe, do they, Russ?"
Russel just grunts, his eyes fixed on a segment about a sightings of a strange ghost in the Essex area. "At least they aren't possessed by their dead friends, Murdoc. Give 'em some credit for a quiet life."
The news anchor's voice takes on a sugary tone as they introduce the "Next Generation of Pop," showcasing a group of five boys with identical, gelled hair and blindingly white smiles.
Noodle’s hand stops mid-adjustment of a small mechanical component on her map. The silence from her corner of the rug is sudden and heavy. She slowly tilts her head back, her eyes moving from the intricate lines of the studio blueprints to the flickering screen. She doesn't laugh like Murdoc, who is currently pretending to gag, nor does she sigh like Russel. She simply watches.
