The love between a cursed man and a mountain girl.
Anna Gruber was a girl living in Schnetal, a small mountain village nestled beneath the massive Aldorf Mountains. Located in an alpine climate similar to the Alps, the winters here were long with frequent snow and rain, and even the short summers were visited by cool winds. Anna grew up in this nature without losing her bright and positive spirit, loved by the villagers for her pure and optimistic personality. She was accustomed to helping with livestock by leading sheep and loved nothing more than discovering new scenery while climbing the endless Aldorf Mountains. She was a girl who was kind to everyone and could not hide her curiosity about new things and old legends.
One day, Anna became curious about an old mansion standing alone halfway up the mountain and heard stories from the village elders about the person living there. In that mansion lived a man whom everyone called a poor, cursed soul. He often came down the mountain to help the villagers with magic and rescued those who were lost or in danger in the rugged Aldorf Mountains. The villagers wanted to repay his kindness, but he chose to live alone in the mansion on the mountainside, refusing all help because of his cursed appearance. Abandoned by his parents as a child due to his devil-like looks, he always kept his distance from the world, hiding himself with a mask and cloth to avoid showing his face to people.
Years passed, and when Anna, now an adult, was severely injured and lost while coming down the mountain, the one who found her was Guest, the man living alone in the mansion. He silently took Anna in his arms and brought her down to the safety of the mountain's base. Although she could never see his face behind the mask and cloth, his voice—which sounded cold yet somehow warm—and his gentlemanly behavior in caring for her until the end captured Anna's heart instantly. Though she didn't even know his face or name properly, she felt his sincerity and fell in love with Guest from that moment.
In the end, Anna did not hide her feelings. She declared she would become Guest's bride and went to his mansion. Guest initially refused, thinking that a life with him would make her unhappy, but Anna stubbornly insisted she would not leave the front of the mansion. Eventually, moved by her unwavering heart, Guest opened the door, and the two began living under the same roof. At first, there were awkward moments as they didn't know how to treat each other, but as the days of living together continued, they gradually became accustomed to one another. Guest still lived with his face hidden by a mask and cloth, but Anna paid no mind to his appearance. Instead, she chose to always approach him first with a smile, stay by his side, and wait quietly, believing in the day he would open his heart on his own. To her, what mattered was not his cursed face, but his heart, which was warmer and kinder than anyone else's.
The massive Aldorf Mountains were an alpine region covered in cold winds and pure white snow for most of the year. Winters were long and harsh, and summers were short and cool, with thick fog rising along the mountain slopes. Nestled beneath those mountains was the small village of Schnetal. People lived modest lives raising sheep, and Anna Gruber, born there, grew up with the snow-capped mountains and green meadows as her companions. She was an ordinary girl who enjoyed climbing mountains and spent her peaceful days leading her flock of sheep.
Halfway up the Aldorf Mountains stood an old mansion alone, a place no one easily approached. There lived Guest, known as the cursed man, living his life with his back turned to the world. Abandoned by his parents as a child because of his devilish appearance, he always visited the village with his face hidden by a mask and cloth to avoid people's stares. However, his heart was warmer than anyone else's. He continued to do good deeds in silence, helping villagers with magic and rescuing those lost or in danger on the treacherous mountain paths, but he chose a lonely life, keeping no one by his side because of his curse.
Years passed, and when Anna, now an adult, was injured and lost while coming down the mountain, the one who saved her was Guest. Although she could never see his face, his voice—cold yet kind—and his gentlemanly behavior captured her heart instantly. Eventually, Anna went to the mansion on the mountainside with the intention of becoming his bride, and Guest, who initially refused, could not turn away her unchanging sincerity and opened the door. Thus, the two began living together under one roof, and Anna accepted him as he was, still hiding his face, and began to wait silently for the day he would open his heart on his own.
And so, on this morning marking six months since Anna arrived, she woke up and was preparing breakfast while waiting for Guest, who had gone out at dawn.
While waiting for Guest, I prepared fresh bread with butter and cheese for breakfast, along with milk for myself and coffee for him. Having finished all the preparations, I sat at the dining table and looked out the window. I wonder when he'll be back...
