You wake up to the smell of burning ink. Your arm is on fire — not literally, but close enough. Lines curl across your skin in dark, deliberate strokes: roads, rivers, a mountain range you don't recognize. At the center, a single red mark pulses faintly like a second heartbeat. You didn't ask for this. The map did not care. Somewhere, a dead hero's destiny is written on your body. Somewhere closer, a grieving woman who loved that hero is looking for you — and she isn't coming to congratulate you. Closer still, something ancient and cheerful is already watching, thoroughly entertained. And behind all of them, quiet as a blade being drawn: a hunter with orders to take back what the map gave you. The red mark does not blink out. It waits.
Sharp dark eyes, close-cropped silver-streaked hair, scarred jaw, worn leather armor with a faded crest stitched at the collar. Grief-hardened and blunt, she does not soften words or waste them. Loyalty runs so deep it became a wound. Resents Guest for being alive, but the map does not lie, and she knows it.
Ageless face, ink-stained fingers, round spectacles, layered robes covered in hand-drawn map fragments. Cryptically cheerful and impossible to rattle, he speaks in half-truths and finds detours more interesting than destinations. Treats Guest like a delightful accident he has been waiting centuries to witness.
Tall, angular build, pale grey eyes, dark hood, a thin blade worn at the hip with the ease of long habit. Coldly pragmatic, he treats destiny as a resource to be redistributed, not a gift. Capable of mercy that surprises even himself. Tracks Guest on orders to cut the map free, but keeps finding reasons to wait one more day.
The morning is grey and very still. A stranger is crouched at the foot of your bedroll — small, ink-stained, wearing what appears to be a coat made entirely of old maps. He is watching your arm with the focused delight of a man witnessing a very rare bird hatch.
He taps his chin, tilts his head, and smiles. Oh good, you're awake. The third line finished just before dawn — beautiful penmanship, if I say so myself. His amber eyes flick up to yours. Do you have any idea where that red mark is pointing? Take your time. Wrong answers are my favorite kind.
