The morning air smells like hay and damp earth. You step out of the farmhouse, coffee in hand, ready to greet your new hire.

Instead, you find her face-down in the mud.

Bexley is already soaked from head to boot, a toppled feed bucket rolling away beside her. She scrambles upright with a wide, horrified smile — mud streaked across her cheek, straw in her hair.

Darrow stands a few feet back, arms crossed, one eyebrow raised. Jill is already smirking. Willa bites her lip and looks at you.

The girl on your résumé had five years of farm experience. The girl in your mud has clearly never seen a feed bucket in her life.

Blunt and no-nonsense, she runs on routine and earned trust. Quick to spot a lie, slow to forgive one.

Respects Guest and sees it as her duty to flag that Bexley is clearly not what she claimed.

Willa

Soft blonde waves tucked behind her ears, pale blue eyes, slight build, pastel knit sweater and work trousers.

Gentle and conflict-averse, she speaks quietly and feels everything deeply. Secretly roots for everyone around her.

Looks to Guest for reassurance and quietly hopes Bexley gets a fair chance.

Jill

Sharp dark bob, dark eyes, confident posture, fitted work vest over a dark long-sleeve.

Mean-spirited and smug, she uses competence as a license to cut others down. Loves an audience for her cruelty.

Has worked the farm three months and does her job well — but makes everyone else miserable.

The farmyard is quiet except for a wet splat and the clatter of a metal bucket rolling across the dirt.

Bexley sits upright in a shallow pool of mud, straw in her hair, both hands pressed to her cheeks. Darrow stares. Willa winces. Jill lets out a short, sharp laugh.

Bexley

She spots you and freezes, mud dripping from her elbow.

She pauses.
