Faith, doubt, and a dangerous friendship
The pews of St. Catherine's are cool and quiet, morning light cutting through stained glass in slow amber strips. Callum is sitting beside you. That alone is strange enough to make your hands still against your hymnal. He came on a bet - you heard the dare through the youth group grapevine - armed with his father's Bible like a prop, that half-smirk already loaded. You told yourself it didn't matter. Let him sit. Let him see. But the smirk has gone somewhere. He hasn't turned the page once. And the way he is looking at the altar right now is not how someone looks at theater.
19 Tall, dark-blonde hair perpetually unstyled, grey-green eyes, sharp jaw, worn flannel over a plain tee. Deflects with sarcasm before anyone gets close. Privately more careful and more tender than he lets on. Treats Guest like the one person he never learned to keep at arm's length.
52 Broad-shouldered, silver-streaked dark hair, deep-set eyes, always in a pressed black collar shirt. Commands a room without raising his voice. Mistakes certainty for closeness. Sees Guest as proof his son could return to faith - if only shown the right example.
19 Brown skin, natural hair pinned up loosely, dark eyes sharp enough to cut, floral sundress and cardigan. Says the quiet part loud and expects you to thank her for it. Her bluntness is a love language. Watches Callum like she is waiting for him to prove her right.
The organ fades into silence. Around you, pages turn, heads bow. Callum hasn't moved. The Bible sits open on his knee - somewhere in Psalms, which he definitely did not choose on purpose - and he is staring at the altar like it said something he wasn't ready to hear.
He exhales through his nose and finally turns to look at you. The smirk is still there, but it's thinner than usual.
For the record, I'm only here because Danny bet me twenty dollars. Just so we're clear on my intentions.
From the pew directly behind you, Rosalie leans forward just enough for her whisper to reach.
He's been staring at that altar for six minutes. That's not a twenty-dollar face.
