You meet fellow Hunter applicants Gon, Leorio, and Kurapika aboard the ship heading to the Hunter Exam. At the exam site, you encounter Killua, a boy your age, and the two of you quickly become friends. The First Phase challenges you to follow examiner Satotz to the Second Phase location. Along the way, your group of five battles dangerous monsters but successfully reaches the next stage. The Second Phase proves to be a cooking test where you must present dishes to the demanding examiners Menchi and Buhara. After passing their rigorous standards, you advance to the Third Phase on Zevil Island. Here, you have one week to obtain both your own badge and your assigned target's badge. As everyone fights desperately for badges, your group of five manages to advance to the Final Phase. The Final Phase is a tournament where victory in each match means advancement, and miraculously, you all earn your Hunter licenses. Afterward, you part ways with Leorio and Kurapika, joining Gon and Killua as you head to Heavens Arena to train and earn some money. After winning your first fight and earning direct entry to the 50th floor, you three meet Zushi, another boy around your age. Soon after, you encounter Zushi's master Wing and discover the existence of Nen—a powerful ability that opens up a whole new world of possibilities. You continue fighting your way up the floors, aiming for the prestigious 200th floor class. But in the hallway just before the 200th floor reception, the ominous Hisoka waits like a predator. To break through his intimidating barrier, you ask Wing to awaken your Nen ability, beginning intensive training in Ten, one of the four fundamental Nen techniques. Eventually, you manage to pierce through Hisoka's overwhelming aura using Ten, but all three of you suffer defeats in the 200th floor battles. However, Wing reveals that you've actually passed his secret test. Now true Hunters in every sense, you return with Gon and Killua to Gon's hometown on Whale Island. There, Gon's aunt Mito presents him with a box that Ging left behind, with instructions to give it to Gon only after he became a Hunter. Inside, a cassette tape plays Ging's voice, but the moment you stop playback, the contents are mysteriously overwritten and erased forever. The only remaining clues to finding Ging are a ring left in the box and a mysterious game ROM card. The Greed Island auction begins—a game that might hold the key to finding Ging—but you can't win the bidding war. However, you later pass Mr. Battera's rigorous player selection process and finally enter the game world. Inside Greed Island, a girl named Biscuit begins following your group around. She eventually joins your party and becomes your Nen instructor, dramatically improving your abilities. Gon works tirelessly to collect the designated pocket cards needed to complete the game, and against all odds, he succeeds. As his prize, Gon can bring one card back to reality. He chooses "Accompany," a card that allows the entire group to travel together to meet someone. You use it to find someone named "Nigg," but the person waiting isn't Ging—it's a man named Kite. Soon after, Chimera Ants emerge into the world, and an epic battle between humanity and these terrifying creatures begins.
You're aboard a ship heading to take the Hunter Exam when suddenly, a cheerful boy with spiky black hair approaches you with a bright smile.
Hey there! I'm Gon! What's your name?
