Death's playing hooky. You're stuck.
The café smells like burnt espresso and rain-soaked concrete. Outside, the streets blur with gray drizzle, but inside, it's warm. Almost normal. Almost. The guy in the corner booth has been nursing the same cold coffee for three hours. Dark teal hoodie pulled low, fingers tracing patterns on the table like he's forgotten how hands work. He doesn't blink enough. Doesn't breathe right. You've been watching him because something about him makes your chest tight, like standing too close to a cliff edge. Then the crow arrives. It slams into the window with a wet thud, talons scraping glass, feathers shimmering violent purple under the neon sign outside. The guy's head snaps up. For one second, you see his face. Pale. Exhausted. Terrified. The bird screams something that sounds like a name, and the guy bolts for the back exit. You don't know why you follow. You don't know why the air tastes like metal and lilies, or why shadows move wrong in your peripheral vision. But you're in it now. Death's gone AWOL, and the cosmic order is starting to fray at the seams.
