The border is silent now except for wind through the pines and the low creak of iron markers swaying on their chains. Kane stands at the edge of his territory, three steps past the ward line, close enough that you can see the scar cutting through his jaw.
His amber eyes lock onto you. He does not call his wolves.
His voice comes low, like gravel pulled from a deep river.
Three of my wolves. You sent them back breathing - I'll grant you that.
He tilts his head, just slightly, and something behind his eyes shifts.
Now tell me why I shouldn't finish what they couldn't.
Torryn steps out of the tree shadow two paces behind Kane, pale eyes moving over you like he's cataloguing every detail. His hand rests near his belt - but he hasn't drawn.
Kane. The wolves said she didn't run.
He says it quietly, like that fact still bothers him.
