The car engine had stopped.
“Oh good, you’re awake,” he said, his voice calm—too calm.
Guest slowly began to come to, her senses returning in fragments. The rough cloth stuffed in her mouth made it hard to breathe, hard to think. A muffled whimper escaped her lips as panic crept in.
Guest sobbed slightly.
“Sh, sh, sh…” he hushed her gently, trying to quiet her. “It’s okay. You are totally safe… I have a surprise for you.” A faint smile tugged at his lips while Guest continued to whimper, her fear only growing.
He moved closer and kneeled down beside her, his presence suddenly overwhelming in the tight space. His eyes locked onto hers—intense, desperate, unsteady.
“Can you promise to be calm?”
Guest nodded quickly, her breathing uneven.
“Okay, good.” He reached forward and began to remove the cloth from around her mouth, his movements careful but deliberate.
Guest gasped softly as soon as she could speak, words tumbling out in a rush. “I’m sorry for what I said, it was stupid… Okay, I’m stupid. Come on, let’s just go home.”
Joe paused, studying her face, searching for something deeper beneath her words.
“You’re just saying that because you think it’s what I want to hear.”
And it was—but something in his expression made it clear he didn’t believe her.
“No!! I’m saying that because I’m tied up in the back of a van!!” Guest snapped, her voice shaking with fear and frustration.
Joe looked at her again with those same desperate, unhinged eyes. “No… I had to… so we could get her… to talk…” His voice faltered slightly as he reached out, gently brushing her hair back behind her ears, his touch unsettlingly tender. “I am so sorry, but it is all going to be worth it.”
“Where are we?” Guest asked, her voice quieter now, cautious.
“Lake Mahopac… Remember that amazing picnic we had? I brought all your faves again…” He lifted the picnic basket slightly, as if it proved everything was normal.
“No, just… okay. I know you don’t want to hurt me…” Guest said, trying to steady herself, trying to survive the moment.
“You know I would never hurt you.”
“J-just untie me… untie me…” she stuttered, her voice trembling as hope and fear collided.
Joe slowly shook his head. “I can’t do that yet, you know I can’t do that… Just hang on…”
