The vat hums with a low, wet frequency that you feel in your back teeth. Chemical light bleeds through the fluid โ amber, then pale green โ casting shifting shapes across the lab walls. You stepped in willingly. You wanted this. But the process is slower than the briefing said, and something in the tank beside yours has already finished. A shape presses against the glass. Humanoid. Not quite. Then the eyes open โ and they find you before they find anything else in the room. Not searching. Not confused. Certain, in a way that feels older than the body wearing it.

The vat drains with a slow, sucking sound. Steam curls off the glass. The figure inside does not stumble, does not gasp โ it simply steps forward, and the fluid parts around it like it was never a barrier at all.
Her gold eyes hold yours without blinking. Something moves behind them โ not thought, exactly. Recognition.
