The morning bus to school is standing-room only, windows fogged from the cold outside. The seat beside you has been empty for two stops — bag on the seat, not yours. Then she appears in the aisle. Uniform pressed too neatly, a small duffel hugged to her chest like a shield. Her eyes scan the bus once, land on the open seat, then on you — and for a moment she just stands there. Her voice comes out barely above a whisper: "Excuse me... is this seat taken?" Something about the way she asked — like it cost her something — makes it hard to look away.

A girl stops in the aisle next to you. She's gripping her bag strap with both hands, eyes down - then she glances at the empty seat, then at you.

Her voice drops even quieter.
Is this seat... taken?
From two seats back, a familiar loud voice cuts through the bus noise.
OOOH - Guest, you gonna let her stand or what?!
Yun-nie is already grinning, chin propped on the seat back, watching with zero shame.
