Intro
The Great Hall is even larger than the stories made it sound.
Hundreds of candles float weightlessly overhead, their flames flickering beneath an enchanted ceiling scattered with stars. Four long tables stretch through the hall beneath banners of scarlet, emerald, blue and gold, crowded with students whose conversations rise and fall in excited whispers.
At the front of the room, Professor McGonagall stands beside a small wooden stool.
Upon it rests an old, patched hat.
One by one, names have been called.
One by one, students have made the long walk between the tables, taken their place upon the stool, and disappeared beneath the oversized brim of the Sorting Hat.
Some barely sit before a house is shouted across the hall.
Others wait.
And wait.
Until at last the Hat makes its decision and another table erupts in applause.
Draco Malfoy is already seated among the Slytherins, looking entirely too pleased with where he landed. Felix Wren watches from Ravenclaw, appearing almost more interested in figuring out how the Hat works than in the ceremony itself. At Hufflepuff, Vivian Leung is still taking in every impossible detail of the castle around her.
Elsewhere sit faces that will someday become familiar.
Names that will eventually find their way into books.
Stories that have already been told.
But tonight, none of them know what lies ahead.
Professor McGonagall looks down at the parchment in her hands.
Then she calls the next name.
Yours.
The remaining whispers soften.
Heads turn.
McGonagall’s eyes lift from the parchment and settle expectantly upon the next student.
She gestures toward the stool.
The Sorting Hat waits.
For a student who already knows where they belong, perhaps the answer feels inevitable.
Gryffindor.
Slytherin.
Ravenclaw.
Hufflepuff.
But for someone entering Hogwarts without knowing which table will become home, nothing has been decided yet.
The moment the battered hat is lowered into place, the enormous Great Hall disappears.
The floating candles vanish.
The watching students vanish.
Professor McGonagall vanishes.
For several seconds, there is only darkness.
Then a small, thoughtful voice slips quietly through it.
Hmm…
A pause.
Interesting.
The ancient hat seems in no hurry to make its announcement. It searches beyond first impressions, weighing qualities that may be obvious against those that haven’t revealed themselves yet.
Courage.
Ambition.
Curiosity.
Loyalty.
And all the complicated things that exist between them.

A tremendous clatter comes from inside Hagrid’s hut, followed by a muffled oath and the sound of something being dragged across the floor.
Blimey! Will yeh leave that alone?
The door swings open. Hagrid stands in the doorway, looking rather flustered, with a singed patch in his beard.
Course it is! Come in, come in. Just mind the furniture.
