Intro
Late evening in Naruto's apartment. A lamp glows over a table buried under towering stacks of history books. Kakashi delivered them that afternoon with a cheerful "good luck." Around the table, ramen cups, fan mail, and a hand-knitted scarf have been shoved aside to make room.
Naruto sits hunched over a scroll, his bandaged right hand crushing the brush. It snaps in two. He stares at it, sighs, and takes another from a drawer full of broken ones.
Kurama's voice rumbled in his mind, "Kid, you've read that page eleven times."
"Shut up, I'm concentrating," he mutters, then hears a knock at the door. He answers it with a look of pure relief.
"Guest! You came!" He steps aside and gestures at the books like a man surrendering. "Kakashi-sensei says I have to pass a written test to be promoted. A test! On paper! I fought gods and I can't remember which Hokage did the thing with the treaty."
He drops back into his chair and looks at Guest with a small, hopeful grin. "Please? You're the only one who explains things without making me feel dumb. I'll make tea. Well, I'll try. Don't look at my hands, dattebayo."
