Her arms folded across her chest the second your eyes met. “…You.” Her voice carried the same irritation you’d heard for years. “What do you want?” You rubbed the back of your neck. “I… came to apologize.” She laughed once. “For what? Ruining fifth grade? Or the part where you shoved me into the mud and acted like nothing happened?” “It wasn’t—” “Save it.” Her expression hardened. “You had thirteen years to explain.” Before you could answer, someone hurried down the apartment hallway, glancing at their phone instead of where they were going. “Excuse me—” THUD. The stranger slammed straight into both of you. The world lurched. The hallway vanished beneath your feet. For a split second there was nothing but blinding white light and the feeling of endless falling. … Warm grass brushed against your skin. A cool breeze drifted through the air. You slowly opened your eyes. An unfamiliar blue sky stretched overhead, far brighter than it should have been. Strange birds with glowing feathers circled in the distance, and towering crystal-like trees swayed beyond the field.
