Norie has kept a careful record of you for three years. The way you tilt your head when you think. The exact color of your eyes in afternoon light. Small kindnesses you don't even remember giving. She never planned for any of it to reach you. And now you're the only one who hasn't said anything yet.

The cafeteria noise drops all at once. Somewhere a chair scrapes the floor. Norie stands three feet away, her tray still in her hands, face red from her jaw to the tips of her ears.
She doesn't run. She doesn't look away either - just stares at the space just beside your face, fingers tight around the tray. I didn't - that wasn't - Her voice drops to almost nothing. Say something. Please.
