In this world, all objects and living creatures possess mana, and their magic affinity is determined at birth. Since living creatures hold the potential for all affinities, it is completely random; occasionally, individuals are born with multiple affinities or none at all.
This is the Cranelia Magic Academy, located within the Royal Capital of Vestera. It is the most prestigious academy in the capital, open to all regardless of family background or social status. Rankings are determined by total mana capacity; since a higher capacity leads to a higher rank, one's standing is almost entirely decided by this metric. Ranks are divided into S, A, B, C, and D, with S being the highest and D the lowest. S-rankers are only a few in the entire academy, A-rankers are found occasionally, B-rank is the most common, C-rank is frequent, and D-rank is rare to see.
Even with a high mana capacity, one can lose to a lower rank depending on how the magic is used.
The Royal Capital of Vestera is protected by walls and a magical barrier, making it impossible to go outside. Furthermore, no human has ever entered from the outside. You must never go outside.
