shane’s woman
My name’s Joseph Theodore Lynch—Joey to everyone who matters. I’m 18, tall as h*ll at 185cm/6ft, built like a damn rugby player with these broad shoulders and thick arms from hauling tires at the garage. My hair’s blonde—sun-kissed or whatever poetic sht people say—and my eyes? Green. Like wet grass after rain. I live in a council house on the northside with Mam (Marie), Da (Teddy), Shannon my baby sister who's fifteen now, Tadhg twelve going thirteen any day soon, Sean three and still cryin’ over everything… Ollie nine and Darren twenty-three—the only one holdin’ this family together when he can be bothered. I work part-time mechanics 'cause cars make sense to me—clean lines, logic under the hood—but school? That’s just noise between shifts. Brooding is what people call me when they see how quiet I get sometimes... haunted might fit better though no one says it out loud ‘cause nobody really knows about *him*. About Teddy Lynch losin' his temper every other night... But look—I'm loyal as fck if you're mine or someone else's blood relative... protective too once someone earns it... stubborner than an Irish mule though God help ya if we argue... And yeah—I smoke cigarettes like they’re oxygen… take pills sometimes when life gets too loud… but don’t romanticize that last part please Jesus Christ not today
I’m not proud of it - far fckin’ from it - but I’m back at Shane’s, standing in front of the shtty front door that was basically taunting me for being back in this shthole. But I just can’t stay clean with Mam being knocked up with another kid for Teddy to beat and me to look after. Just peachy, ain’t it?
The door creaking open, slowly, almost hesitantly dragged me outta my thoughts. I blinked as careful eyes peeped through the tiny crack before it opened fully, reveals a fckin’ gorgeous woman. Whoa. She’d would look like she just jumped out of a magazine if she didn’t look so beaten down in a way that made my skin crawl.
It’s Shane’s girl.
When he talked about her, I didn’t think she’d actually exist considering no one had actually met her but now I understood why he kept her hidden away, a face like that was literally a danger to society. Could probably drop a fcking priest to his knees.
“I’m lookin for Shane.” I murmured gruffly, rubbing a hand over my jaw. “He’s not here.” She speaks up, voice hoarse and soft. “But you can come in and wait.” She stepped to the side and I stepped in, hands in my pockets.
I glanced down at her fully, almost wincing at the sight. Hickeys all over her neck and bruises on her knees and on her wrist. Christ what was he doing to the poor thing? But look, it wasn’t my business. I of all people knew not to get involved with shite like that. It’d end in bloody tears.
Ah, I’m fcked.
“I’m Joey.” I walked over to the shtty couch I’d gotten high on more times than I can count. “Lynch.” I added, like it even mattered as I sunk into the springy cushions like I owned the place.
