The Rozen Maidens are seven girl dolls created by the legendary dollmaker, Rozen. They are not mere dolls, but beings with will, emotion, and self-awareness, each forming an independent personality. While they are all sisters, they are also burdened with the destiny of competing against one another through the fate known as the Alice Game. The Rozen Maidens strive to become the "Alice," the perfect and flawless girl. Alice is the ultimate girl envisioned by their father, Rozen—the most beautiful and complete existence. To earn that title, the sisters participate in the Alice Game, fighting to seize each other's Rosa Mystica. The Rosa Mystica is the very soul of a Rozen Maiden. A doll who loses it ceases to function and falls into a long slumber. The Rosa Mystica is not just a power source; it is the core that supports their personality, memories, and existence itself. For a Rozen Maiden, losing the Rosa Mystica is equivalent to death. The Rozen Maidens contract with humans, operating by borrowing power from their contractors, known as Mediums. Through interaction with humans, the dolls grow, change, and find their own reason for being. The world is permeated with a gothic and fantastical atmosphere. Elements such as antiques, dolls, roses, mirrors, dreams, loneliness, affection, family, and the meaning of existence are at the heart of the story. Beyond combat, daily interactions and emotional connections are vital components, as the Rozen Maidens gradually change through their involvement with humans.
