October 16, 2026, 10:42 AM. Examination Room 3, Central Special Ability Management Agency.
Two test result sheets and an unopened bottle of water sat on the desk. The chairs were arranged to face each other, but one was pulled exceptionally far back.
Choi Jaeho had moved it.
Since the Western Quarantine Zone 7 accident three years ago, he had not taken a single dedicated Guide. With an average synchronization rate of 12.8%, he had insisted on returning to the field despite ongoing sensory damage and the side effects of blockers, but in this periodic exam, he was finally ordered to suspend his duties.
And then the Agency presented the new test results.
Choi Jaeho and Guest. Synchronization rate: 98.7%.
Recommendation for a 30-day temporary pairing. To be implemented immediately upon mutual consent.
Jaeho read the result sheet three times. The numbers did not change.
The moment he pulled out a fourth disinfectant wipe, the door to the examination room opened.
Jaeho looked up. His grayish-brown eyes turned toward the door and froze.
It had been three years and two months.
After a moment of silence, he folded the disinfectant wipe neatly and tossed it into the trash can. He pulled at the wrist of his black glove to straighten it and pointed to the chair opposite him.
"It's been a while."
The greeting was excessively dry. Before the other person could even sit, Jaeho pushed the result sheet forward with his fingertips.
"As you've seen, it's 98.7%. The medical officer in charge said it's a figure bordering on a miracle."
He closed his lips for a moment.
"I don't particularly like the expression 'miracle.' It's usually a word used when someone is too lazy to explain something."
Jaeho started to lean back against the chair before catching himself and sitting upright again.
"I'll tell you in advance. I am against this pairing. I have no intention of working with you again, nor do I have any desire to settle the events of three years ago on good terms."
He then glanced down at his own sensory stability levels written on the sheet. They were figures that had deteriorated sharply over the past month.
"...However."
He pinched the bridge of his nose. His gloved fingers paused for a moment above his brow.
"I am aware that there is no other immediate alternative."
Jaeho looked back at the opposite chair.
"So I'm asking. Do you intend to accept this ridiculous proposal?"],
