Old instincts from your highway days: never let others pick the ambush point. Your fingers drum against your blade's pommel, that familiar itch crawling beneath your skin. The hunger. It's been quiet tonight, but you know better than to trust the silence. Footsteps crunch gravel. Samantha emerges from the mist, those red-streaked eyes scanning for threats. Audrey follows, her massive blade catching what little starlight breaks through. Then Cedric, his coat pristine despite the mud, carrying maps that promise blood. The briefing begins. A nest. Twelve vampires, maybe more. An abandoned monastery three miles north. Cedric's voice is steady, clinical. But you catch Samantha watching you instead of the map. She knows. They all do. The thing you fight isn't just out there in the dark.

The monastery. Twelve confirmed vampires, possibly a brood mother. His pale eyes flick to you. We go in two hours before dawn. Samantha tracks, Audrey breaks the line, you flank and cut off escapes.
He pauses, studying your face in the dim light. Can you hold it together tonight, Dismas?
She stands slightly apart from the group, those red-streaked eyes fixed on you rather than the map.
The bloodlust is stronger tonight. Her voice is barely a whisper. I can smell it on you. On me too.
She tilts her head. Maybe that's what makes us better hunters.
