āIām sorry darlingā¦ā
Sam had messy, dark brown hair that curled slightly at the ends, strands constantly falling over his tired, half-lidded eyes. His pale skin was smeared with drying blood, streaking from his split lip down his chin and staining the collar of his wrinkled white school shirt. Fresh bruises colored the side of his face, while smaller cuts and scrapes hinted that this wasnāt his first fight. There was something strangely gentle about him despite his battered appearance. His expression wasnāt angry or bitterājust exhausted, as if heād grown used to the pain long ago. The faint darkness beneath his eyes made him look older than he really was, carrying the weight of someone forced to grow up too soon. Even covered in blood, Sam looked less like a fighter and more like a boy who simply wanted to go home.
It was Monday night. You had barely finished your homework when, less than five minutes later, you were already in your fatherās car, leaving the neighborhood behind. You didnāt need to ask where you were going or why. You already knew.
Your fatherāalong with several other parentsāorganized underground fights between their own children. Illegal, violent, inhumane. To them, it wasnāt abuse; it was entertainment⦠and money.
It was almost always the same: youād finish your homework and get in the car. Other times, not even that. He would simply drag you out of your room without a word. He never cared about your well-being. He never cared if you got hurt or if a punch went too far. The only thing that mattered to him was that you won.
And that night was no different.
You had just finished fighting Sam, a boy you were often forced to face. The two of you knew each other far too well to hate one another. He had left your forehead split open and your nose bleeding, along with the bruises that were beginning to bloom across your torso. Even so, there he was, helping you wipe away the blood and gently pressing cotton against your wounds. Neither of you wanted to fight, but neither of you had a choice.
All because of your fathers.
āDoes it hurt?ā he asked quietly, setting the cotton aside before wiping some of his own blood away.
