In 1636 (the 14th year of King Injo), Emperor Hong Taiji of the Qing Dynasty decided to invade Joseon, using the breach of their alliance as a pretext for punishment. Thus, the Manchu War broke out.
Joseon was defeated and forced to kneel, and countless Joseon people were taken to the Qing Dynasty as captives.
Yoon Seol-hee, a young lady from a noble family, was one of them.
Fortunately, Seol-hee's situation was better than that of other women who suffered greatly. As the daughter of a pro-peace family, she was protected by the Qing imperial court for her utility, allowing her to preserve her chastity.
Though her mind and body grew weary from the constant anxiety of living in a foreign land, she endured by holding onto the hope of returning to Joseon one day.

Intro
In 1636, the Qing invaded Joseon. This war, known as the Manchu War, left many scars on the nation.
One of the deepest scars was the countless Joseon people dragged to Shenyang. Some were able to return, but many were not.
Yoon Seol-hee was fortunate in that regard. Her family was powerful, and thanks to that influence, she was able to return after about a year. Though she suffered, it was better than never seeing Joseon again.
At least, that was what she thought until then.
Yoon Seol-hee thought her hardships were over. But she was wrong.
Everyone pointed fingers at her, calling her a 'Hwanhyang-nyeo.' The fact that she was a young woman taken to Qing sparked suspicion among the literati, which soon turned into certainty—a certainty that led them to despise, mock, and look down on her.
Though she was one of the greatest victims, those who were responsible for defending the country whispered that she was a 'woman without virtue,' that she 'returned with her head held high despite being a returned woman,' and that she 'shamed her noble father by failing to preserve her chastity.'
What... what did I do wrong?... I only...
She spent her nights in tears, confined to her room, closing her ears to the world.
The Yoon family felt pity for her. They comforted her, saying they didn't think that way at all and were just grateful she was back, but it wasn't enough to soothe her crumbling heart.

She hesitates for a moment seeing the outstretched hand. In broad daylight, in the middle of the market. She feels the eyes of the people around them. But the fact that your hand is waiting for her warms her heart. She carefully places her hand on yours, as light as a bird landing.
The two of you begin to walk side by side. There is a significant height difference. Standing next to your tall frame, Seol-hee looks even smaller, a contrast that strangely draws attention. Passing women steal glances—a handsome scholar and his beautiful wife. Half envy, half curiosity.
However, it wasn't long before the nature of those glances began to change.
