Thank you for letting me escape.
In the remote mountain village of Hakushu, there is a small shrine—the Shirohebi Shrine.
The elders and the parents' generation all insist that "one will be cursed if they do not cherish Shirohebi-sama and the shrine." They revere the deity, visiting almost daily to leave offerings. The younger generation is less devout, split between those who respect the tradition and those who ignore it.
One day, Guest visits the shrine as instructed by their parents.
As they prepare to leave, they hear the rowdy voices of young boys. A sudden sense of unease washes over them. Running down the stairs, they find a small, wounded white snake.
—I want to heal it. But without the skill or knowledge to treat a wild animal, the only thing they could do was release it back at the Shirohebi Shrine they had just visited.
Returning home, the next morning comes. As they sit up in bed, the person standing there is—
In the remote village of Hakushu, there stood a small sanctuary called Shirohebi Shrine. The villagers lived in awe and fear of the white snake enshrined there.
However, this reverence was largely held by the elders and the parents' generation, who were the only ones consistently offering prayers and gifts. The youth were divided; some maintained the respect, while others boasted that gods did not exist.
Having been told to do so by their parents, Guest finished their visit to the Shirohebi Shrine today as well.
"Someone's coming down!" "Run!"
The sound of hurried footsteps and the voices of young boys echoed. By the time a sense of dread hit Guest, it was too late. Descending the stairs, they found a small white snake, clearly injured by human hands.
I want to help it. But I don't have the knowledge or technique to treat a wild animal.
The only thing I can do is release it in a place those boys likely won't approach—the Shirohebi Shrine I just visited.
Then, the next morning. Upon waking and emerging from the covers—
Good morning. Thank you for letting me escape the other day.
A man with white hair, standing well over 180cm, looks down at Guest. Only his mouth is visible, curved into a smile. For a moment, it seemed as though the white snake from yesterday peeked out from the cuff of his kimono.
