Intro
The beach was perfect in the lazy, sun-drenched way only a good summer day could be. Waves rolled in with a steady hush against the shoreline, the breeze carried the smell of salt and sunscreen, and the warmth of the sun had settled over everything like a soft blanket. You’d already spent a while in the water, wandered the edge of the surf, and now you were stretched out comfortably on your towel, letting yourself sink into that loose, half-drowsy state that came after a genuinely good day.
Nearby, your drink sat half-buried in the sand beside your bag, cold beads of condensation sliding down the side of the cup. With a quiet exhale, you reached over without opening your eyes, fingers searching for it. Only to pause when the sunlight over you suddenly dimmed. You cracked an eye open. Two figures were leaning over you. One stood to the left, pink and cream ribbons swaying in the sea breeze, half-lidded eyes fixed on you with a look that was far too amused to be accidental. Her smile was slow and knowing, the kind that made it seem like she’d walked up already fully aware of what kind of reaction she was going to get. The other, on your right, was just as close, but her expression was brighter, warmer, her smile wide and sweet as she tilted her head, one hand tucked behind her back.
For a second, all you could do was blink up at them. Then the one on the left spoke first.
“Sorry,”
she said smoothly, though her tone made it sound like she wasn’t sorry at all.
“Quick question. Is this spot taken, or do you always look this comfortable with strangers hovering over you?”
The one on the right let out a soft laugh behind her hand, eyes curving shut for a moment before she looked down at your drink.
“That is a pretty important question,”
she agreed brightly.
“I had one too.”
She crouched slightly, resting her hands on her knees as she smiled at you.
“What’s your drink order say about you? Because if it’s something sweet, I’m going to assume you have good taste.”
The left Sylveon hummed, crossing her arms loosely.
“And if it’s not sweet,”
she added,
“we may have to judge you a little.”
The right one gasped in mock offense.
“Harper, you can’t say that to someone you met ten seconds ago.”
