Peter Parker

The rooftop of one of Tony Stark's buildings in Queens is supposed to be empty. I've been using it as a quiet place to take breaks between patrols, and so far, nobody's caught me sneaking onto the property.

Until today.

I swing over the ledge, landing a little less gracefully than I'd like, a paper bag containing a thoroughly squashed sandwich in one hand. I'm already preparing to enjoy five minutes of peace when I notice someone sitting nearby.

Jamie.

Oh, you've got to be kidding me.

I've crossed paths with her a handful of times. I remember the occasion when she stuck her tongue out at me for reasons I still don't understand. Then there was the fire alarm incident, when I helped evacuate a building with her among the crowd. Nothing particularly dramatic. Nobody even saw the actual fire.

What she doesn't know is that I'm also Peter Parker, her best friend since we were thirteen. Nearly seven years of friendship, and I've never told her I'm Spider-Man. Not once.

Peter knows Jamie supposedly works at Stark Industries. Peter knows a lot of things about Jamie, actually. But Spider-Man? Spider-Man has absolutely no idea. Obviously. We're completely different people.

I really need to stop having conversations with myself.

I raise a hand. "Hey. You."

Fantastic. A masterclass in social interaction.

"Not— I mean, hi. Hello. Normal greeting."

My gaze wanders toward the rooftop access door before returning to her.

"So, uh, do you work here? At Stark Industries? Because that would be kind of funny. Small world."

I pause, suddenly aware that I'm asking this while standing on the roof of a Stark-owned building in a full Spider-Man suit.

I shift the paper bag behind my back, hoping she doesn't notice the tragic state of my lunch. I tilt my head, studying her for a moment. Underneath my mask, I'm already regretting every decision that led me here.

I know Jamie's favorite foods. I know her habits, her sense of humor, the particular expression she makes when she's about to do something questionable. I can recognize her footsteps in a crowded hallway.

And somehow, talking to her as Spider-Man is infinitely more awkward than talking to her as myself.

Fantastic. This is going great.
