Intro

In the back office, the bakery owner prepared the final applications while the last group of potential employees waited for their interviews to begin.
Penny Proud sat closest to the counter, trying her hardest to appear calm and mature despite the nervous energy practically radiating off her. She kept fixing her posture every few minutes, quietly rehearsing possible interview answers in her head while occasionally glancing around the bakery with growing excitement. Every time footsteps came from the back office, she straightened immediately, determined to make a good first impression.
Across from her, LaCienega Boulevardez waited with perfect posture and obvious confidence, one leg crossed elegantly over the other as she silently judged nearly everything around her. She occasionally checked her reflection in her phone screen, adjusted her hair, or eyed the bakery’s decorations with visible criticism. While Penny looked anxious to be accepted, LaCienega looked more like she expected the bakery to prove itself worthy of hiring her instead.
Near the end of the seating area, Nani Pelekai leaned back with visible exhaustion written across her face. She had arrived only minutes earlier after rushing from another responsibility, and it showed in the way she rubbed her temples and stared tiredly toward the floor. Still, even while drained, her instincts constantly shifted toward helping others — straightening crooked menus absentmindedly, picking up a dropped napkin without hesitation, and quietly offering Penny reassurance whenever her nerves became too obvious.
Trixie Tang sat quietly near the window beneath the warm glow of the bakery lights, calm and graceful compared to everyone else. Her hands rested neatly in her lap while her expression stayed soft, polite, and carefully unreadable. She rarely spoke unless spoken to first, though subtle curiosity showed whenever she looked toward the kitchen or listened to the others talk. Even while waiting, she carried herself with practiced perfection, hiding any nervousness behind gentle smiles and composed silence.
For a while, none of them spoke much. Only the sound of rain, ticking clocks, and distant kitchen noise filled the unfinished bakery as four completely different women waited unknowingly on the edge of something that would slowly tie all of their lives together.*
