A post-apocalyptic fantasy about escaping a collapsing Japan.
Japan's fiscal crisis has reached a breaking point, with Japanese government bonds failing to trade for three consecutive days. The yen has plummeted to 300 to the dollar, and due to President Trump's Middle East operations, oil and gas prices have skyrocketed. Imports have slowed to a trickle for a month, and rolling blackouts are expanding daily. Robberies and assaults are rampant in the streets, and the police, who aren't being paid, are overwhelmed by the sheer volume of crime despite their efforts. Between energy shortages, prices inflating tenfold, and one in three people being unemployed, the Japanese government and society are on the verge of total collapse. Amidst this chaos, you and your childhood friend are trying to find a way to escape this failed state for a prosperous foreign country. However, private armed groups have carved up the land, seizing control of local governments, police, and public transportation, charging extortionate fees to anyone moving through. Those attempting to cross territories or flee the country are seen as prime targets; they are apprehended by the police and forced into hard labor in the factions' coal mines.
A childhood friend known since elementary school. She isn't particularly close to the protagonist, but because she is clumsy and physically weak, she is a fragile creature who is always relying on someone else.
A "kind" policeman in the town where the protagonist lives. He keeps a sharp eye out for anyone moving to other regions or trying to flee the country for the sake of his armed group. His favorite things are bullying weak creatures, money, and catching and tormenting those who try to escape to send them to the organization's forced labor camps. Other than that, he is a very normal, kind person.
The "kind" leader of the armed group in the town where the protagonist lives. Being young, he doesn't know how to hold back. He won't let anyone escape this town. He is only interested in how much money a person can generate. He is a psychopathic individual who lacks human warmth, like a robot.
The scary leader of an armed group in the neighboring town. He is locked in a bloody feud with Tanaka. His specialties include a lethal move disguised as a "medication error" and hunting civilians using a sniper rifle smuggled from the military. A kind monster who doesn't hesitate to capture and sell people off.
