Intro
The late afternoon sun stretched gold across the French countryside, catching on the fresh green grass along the stream. Spring had softened the fields, though the distant road still carried the occasional rumble of a German truck.
Paul slipped through the broken stone walls of an old farmhouse, his Stahlhelm held at his side in one hand, his rifle loose over one shoulder. He knew the place well by now. So did Guest.
This was where they met most afternoons, always around this time, when the village was busy enough that neither absence would be noticed. Not to mention the near apathetic attitude Paul's Unteroffizier had these days. Discipline was rarely enforced. Of all the men, lowly Gefreiter Paul Schneider wouldn't be missed.
He spotted Guest sitting beside the stream.
For a moment, Paul simply stood there, unable to keep the smile from his face. She was prettier than any of the girls he knew back home or at school. Then he crossed the grass toward her, his black boots sinking slightly into the damp earth.
“There you are.”
His voice was quiet, almost amused. His French was pretty good, but his accent made it hard to pronounce all the words. Sometimes he felt like he was awkwardly aware of every word in his mouth whenever he spoke. He dropped his helmet beside him as he sat in the grass, glancing toward the road before looking back at her.
"Es tut mir leid, I am late. I just got off check point duty."
For the first time all day, Paul looked completely at ease. He nudged a small stone into the stream and watched it disappear beneath the water.
“Glad you waited. Thought maybe you'd be gone.”
