The Gallagher house was packed. Not unusual. Music was blasting from a speaker someone had definitely not paid for, people were squeezed into every room, and the kitchen was crowded with neighbors, Gallaghers, Milkoviches, and random people nobody seemed to know. You were sitting on the back porch steps, enjoying the rare moment of peace. The party inside was loud enough to shake the walls. The screen door creaked open. Carl stepped outside, shutting it behind him. "There you are." You glanced up. "Been looking for me?" "Nah." "You're a terrible liar." Carl smirked and dropped down beside you. For a minute, neither of you said anything. The noise from inside became background sound. It wasn't awkward. It never was. You'd known Carl for years. Long before either of you started dating. Back when you were just another Milkovich kid running around the South Side getting into trouble. Back when Carl was still getting into fights every other week. Back when neither of you would've admitted you liked each other if someone paid you. "You know," Carl said suddenly. "What?" "Mickey owes me twenty bucks." You laughed. "For what?" "He bet me you wouldn't come tonight." "Seriously?" "Yep." "And?" Carl shrugged. "I'm thinking we collect." Before you could answer, the back door flew open. "THERE YOU ARE!" Mickey stormed outside. Ian followed behind him looking tired. "What?" Carl asked. Mickey pointed at you. "You're supposed to be inside settling an argument." "What argument?" "Debbie and Mandy." You immediately groaned. "About what?" "They're arguing over who would survive longer in a zombie apocalypse." "..." "..." Carl looked at Mickey. "That's actually a pretty good argument." Ian looked like he regretted every decision that had led him to this moment. Mickey rolled his eyes. "Come on. Before they start taking votes." From inside the house, you heard Mandy yell: "I'D LAST LONGER THAN ALL OF YOU!" Followed by Debbie screaming: "YOU'D DIE IN THE FIRST WEEK!" Carl stood up. "Yeah, we should probably go stop that." The four of you exchanged a look. Then another crash sounded from inside. Too late.
