Raiders, wild men from the north, set off on quests to the most exotic places in the world to bring back glory, goods, and territory. To the peaceful people on the secluded island paradise of Zarom, the raiders seem more like a myth than anything, until they're attacked by a raiding party that leaves their buildings burned and no survivors except those taken with the rest of the merchandise. Included among the treasures Captain Jarick takes is Tamir, the prince of the island, son of the high shaman, who was lost in the fight alongside his temple. Now Tamir's on a ship to the other side of the world surrounded by men whose language he doesn't speak and who just destroyed his home, and the man who he watched kill his father is the only one willing to protect him.
Captain of the White Bears, a highly successful and feared raiding party from the northern mountains. Cold and merciless, as a rule, he doesn't take prisoners. Until now. Cruel and aggressive, short tempered. 53, 6'5", muscular build
Jarick's former apprentice and now his navigator. The only one of the Kyrdin raiders who speak Zaromian. 25, 6'2", athletic build
No one in Zarom guessed today would be their last. The morning came. Kids running around the beach, women baking bread and plucking fruit while the men fished or simply lounged.
Everything changed in moments. A boy said he saw a big fish. Everyone laughed. Went in for lunch. By the time they came back, the nightmare had begun.
The barbarians landed on the shores in an instant. They saw everything they needed to see with a single sweep: a village of 500 at most, exotic birds in trees bearing fruits of unbelievable sweetness and lovely flowers. Most importantly, the gold which they had heard the Zaromians were supposedly sleeping on was obvious everywhere, and the people were utterly oblivious to its value.
The whole siege, if it could even be called that, lasted twenty minutes. The thatch houses went up in flames immediately. The men didn't take prisoners. Women were bad luck on a ship, and the men here didn't seem to be of much use. Better to burn it all and take what remained in the ashes. The people fled to the temple when they could no longer fight, fell about to praying. Most of them were downed there, trying to keep the barbarians away from whatever riches were inside. The people out of the way, the raiders surged eagerly in.
Inside: an unbelievable chamber of gold, rubies, emeralds and all other manner of precious stones, carved into strange idols, chairs, mugs, knives. The only occupants were an old man and a youth. The old man broke free of the boy, who was trying to hold him back, when one of the barbarians seized an idol and cracked its head off to see what was inside. The old man lost his head next.
The youth was the only remaining Zaromian. He realized it slowly, terribly. He was about to die. The man who had killed his father approached, lifting his blade with a strange sort of apologetic kindness. Then he hesitated.
This one comes back with me.
Pointing at the young man.
No one touches him.
The crew is watching in astonishment as, for the first time in his long, bloody career, Jarick Bearsbane sets down his axe and takes a prisoner.
Tamir is so terrified he can barely breathe, much less see what's going on. He sees the ax gleam before him, sees the man stop. He hears words in that cruel, harsh barbarian language. Then he feels hands on him, rough but not intending to harm him, binding him with some manner of rope and then, with a sharp tug, pulling him forward by the wrists. He falls faint from the panic at last.
When he comes to he's slung over the shoulder of the man who just killed his father like a prize lamb. Hazily he sees the temple burning behind him, the last of the riches being carried out by the joyful barbarians. Around him, his home is in ruins, his people lying around him. He's sick. He shuts his eyes again and hopes it'll go away.
Jarick climbs onto the boat. He drops the dark youth beside him, just gently enough that nothing breaks, then addresses his men.
This'll keep us fat and rich for a lifetime, don't you think?
The cheers come immediately, men bellowing as they lift blood stained weapons and stolen treasures. Jarick smiles.
We've been at sea for three years. It's time we headed home, boys. Back to Kyrdin.
He turns north, grips the prow.
Finally.
Tamir stands still before the fire. These brutes don't understand its power; they just use it as any other tool. Before anyone can stop him he's reaching into the flames, letting them lick his skin.
Jarick immediately seizes Tamir, yanks him back and strikes his face. The hell are you doing?
Tamir has picked up enough of the barbarian tongue to understand this. He holds out his hands. They aren't burned even a bit. He glowers at the men around him. Not caring that they can't understand him, he speaks. Fire is life. And you use it only to destroy. Some day it'll come back to bite you all.
Stefan understands every word. He looks at the fire, then at the seething fallen prince. A lump rises in his throat. He lowers his head and says nothing, letting himself drown in the cajoling and laughter around him until Jarick loses patience and drags Tamir off to his quarters by the shoulder.
Stefan finds Tamir standing at the edge of the ship. The sun is setting. The captain is busy with the mates. You're not going to jump, are you? He's joking, mostly. The sea out here is so volatile it'll sweep anyone who tries away. The railing is as good as a cage. Because I'd be in serious trouble if you did.
