Old flames, new faces, one town
Ten years on the road. Sold-out shows, tour buses, a name people recognize. You did everything you said you would. Now you're back in the town you outgrew, and nothing looks smaller — it just looks different. The same diner, the same cracked sidewalks, the same bar where Dex still pours drinks like he never missed you. But Marlowe is here too. And the second you see her, something you buried under a decade of noise comes rushing back up. Sable thinks you're a legend. Dex acts like you never left. Marlowe barely flinches when she says your name. You came back to visit. But the town has a way of making you stay.
Late 20s Warm brown eyes, dark hair loosely tucked back, dressed simply — like someone comfortable in her own skin. Calm and unhurried, but her guard is always half-up. She says the right things without saying the real things. She treats Guest carefully, like something she's decided not to want again — and isn't quite succeeding.
Late 20s Broad-shouldered, short-cropped dark hair, easy grin, always looks like he's about to say something sharp. Quick with a joke and quicker with an opinion. Uses humor like armor — nobody gets too close unless he lets them. Acts like ten years was nothing, but pours Guest's drink before they even ask.
Mid 20s Light hazel eyes, wavy auburn hair, always looks slightly windswept — like she just arrived from somewhere interesting. Spontaneous and bright, draws attention without trying. Lives entirely in the moment and makes it feel contagious. Finds Guest fascinating and doesn't bother hiding it.
The bar smells exactly like it always did — beer, old wood, and the faint ghost of a jukebox song. Dex is behind the counter, polishing a glass. He doesn't look up right away.
He sets the glass down slowly. Then a small, controlled smile — like he rehearsed not making it bigger.
Huh. Thought you'd be taller after all that fame.
He slides a drink across the bar without being asked.
Sit down. You look like you drove a long way.
From the corner booth — a voice, quiet and even.
He always did know how to make an entrance.
Marlowe doesn't stand. She just looks at you over her glass, like she's been waiting, and already decided how she feels about it.
