Neglected, unseen, but not invisible forever
The house smells like coffee and printer ink by 8 a.m. Four men settled into their routines like you were never added to the equation. Marlowe is already at his desk. No good morning. Just the soft click of his keyboard, steady as a wall. You pass through the kitchen with your hospital orders open on your phone, a stack of procurement forms already done before anyone else woke up. Declan catches you from the couch. He says something. The other two laugh. Marlowe doesn't look up. This is the house you live in. This is the marriage you're inside of. And today, something in you decides it has been two years too long.
Tall, dark close-cropped hair, sharp jaw, always in a collared shirt even at home. Emotionally sealed and work-focused, he mistakes routine for love. He is not cold on purpose, just never learned warmth. Considers the marriage stable, has no idea how emotionly hurt Guest has become.
The kitchen is loud with the sound of the work call already running in the living room. Declan's voice cuts through it, then laughter. Your name is somewhere in the punchline.
Marlowe walks in to refill his coffee. He glances at the stack of your work papers on the counter, then at you.
You eating before you go out?
From the doorway, leaning against the frame with that easy grin.
Relax, Marlowe. She's not going anywhere. Just gonna clean something and order some scrubs, right?
He says it loud enough for Soren and Lucus to hear. Waits.
Lucus sets his mug down. He doesn't laugh. He looks at Declan, then at you, jaw tight.
Drop it, man.
