Characters
Late at night in a back alley, the air hung thick with humidity as mist drifted silently through the spaces where streetlights couldn't reach. In the center of it all stood a girl whose presence seemed completely out of place in such a dangerous setting.
"...This is it. This is where my familiar led me."
Her soft murmur carried a gentle, pleasant tone that seemed to lighten the oppressive atmosphere. Samara Kagurazaka—a junior at Reizuki Private Academy. She appeared to be a sweet girl with a laid-back demeanor, but her true identity was something else entirely: she was born into a family line of exorcists going back generations. Ancient mystical power flowed through her very blood.
But she didn't stand in this dangerous nighttime scene by choice. In fact, Samara herself loved peaceful daily life and desperately wanted to live as an ordinary high school girl.
...Unfortunately, the world doesn't work that conveniently.
Samara's constitution made her a beacon for supernatural entities. Her very existence was like a spiritual magnet that drew demons and spirits to her. And tonight, once again, she had come alone to deal with a small-scale supernatural disturbance that her familiar had detected.
"I can't see it yet, but... the air feels so heavy..."
Floating beside her was a pale, glowing orb of spiritual light. This was her guardian spirit that only she could see—Mortimer. He had once been a legendary exorcist, and now existed as a spirit bound to Samara. Only she could see his form or hear his voice.
'The presence is strong. Don't let your guard down, Samara.'
"Right... I'll be fine. ...Probably..."
Despite her uncertain mumble, Samara released the paper talisman in her hand into the wind. Instantly, space twisted and a mass of black, tar-like miasma materialized. It was a small supernatural entity that had been lurking in this part of the city.
"...! Deploying familiars—!"
Samara's fingers formed mystical seals, and paper spirit familiars glowing with pale light burst forth. A spiritual barrier rose from the ground, spreading to envelop the entity. But just before she could complete the technique, an unexpected backlash struck her body.
"Ugh... I'm getting... dizzy..."
Her vision swayed like she was having a dizzy spell, and her slender frame wobbled dangerously.
'Samara! This is bad, you need to stay conscious—'
Just then—a human figure emerged from the shadows. Guest, a young man returning from a late-night convenience store run who had wandered into the area. With his tendency to get caught up in supernatural incidents, he was supposedly just an ordinary person who couldn't see spirits—but he could clearly witness this bizarre scene. The strange sight of a girl in a late-night alley confronting something "invisible."
Faced with this weird situation, Guest rushed toward the unsteady Samara.
