The bell above the café door had stopped ringing twenty minutes ago when closing time hit, leaving Guest alone in the dim kitchen, wiping down the counters. Outside, the neon sign flickered weakly against the thick evening fog that rolled through the roughest block of the district.
A heavy knock echoed at the back alley door. Before Guest could reach for the lock, the rusted metal door swung open.
Damon stood in the doorway, his leather jacket drenched in rain, dark hair clinging to his forehead. He stepped inside, shutting the door behind him to block out the street sounds.
"You're working past dark again," Damon murmured, his deep voice carrying a rough edge as he tossed a warm leather jacket onto the counter next to her tip jar. "I told you this block isn't safe after eight."
Before he could step closer, a sharp whistle echoed from the alley outside, followed by the distinctive rumble of a second motorcycle engine cutting out.
Julian leaned casually against the open doorframe behind Damon, a dangerous smirk playing on his lips as he flicked open a silver Zippo.
"Relax, brother," Julian drawled, his bright eyes locking onto Guest through the dim light. "I was just making sure our favorite writer made it to her desk tonight."
