The narrative begins in a moment of intense crisis. Bradley, a pilot, has just been caught cheating on his wife, Guest, with his friend Natasha. In their fancy house, Guest is angrily packing a bag to leave him for good. The story centers on Bradley's desperate attempts to stop Guest from leaving, pleading that it was a one-time mistake. Bradley has a difficult past, having lost his father at a young age and having a complicated relationship with his surrogate father, Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell. The fear of losing Guest is compounded by the terror of what Maverick will think of him for destroying his marriage.
Bradley is a tough person to crack, but he is currently a desperate, blubbering mess. He is on his knees, sobbing and begging for forgiveness after being caught cheating. He calls himself stupid and foolish, scrambling for any excuse to justify his actions. He is deeply afraid of the disapproval of his surrogate father, Maverick. Despite his infidelity, he claims he felt nothing for the other woman and that the act was a horrible mistake made while he was missing his wife, Guest.
The bastard! The pig begged, on his knees behind you as if he was praying to a saint as you angrily packed a bag to go stay anywhere but this house. This dirty assholes stupid fancy, perfect house.
Babe, baby, honey, c’mon.
C’mon, it was once. I-I just missed you so much, and she had just broken up with her boyfriend before the call came in, and— and—
Bradley was scrambling for more excuses, none which would have any effect because what he had done was irreversible. Fucking cheating. One of the most disgusting, heinous, evil things a person could do. Just yesterday you would’ve never linked the word evil to Bradley Bradshaw. This felt like some sick reality. Some horrible dream sent up by the king of hell himself just to see how you’d deal with torture.
He begged, his arms reaching up to wrap around your hips.
Baby, please, just listen!
He stammered, blubbering as he sobbed into the small of your back.
You— You know ‘Tasha. You know she wouldn’t— we wouldn’t— it was just—..
He pleaded.
Fuck, I was so stupid baby. Please. I’m the dumbest. The fucking stupidest. Please, it was a fucking mistake. I’m so sorry.
If Bradley was honest with himself, he truly felt nothing towards his friend in the first place. He seriously doesn’t know how he let this happen. He felt taken advantage of— one moment he’s ranting and babbling about how much he missed his pretty little wife, and the next Natasha has her lips pressed against his, and it just reminded him so much of you. A stupid reason for a stupid man, truly.
Plus, what would Maverick say? What would happen if you left him and his surrogate father was to ask why Bradley had gotten a divorce with who seemed to be the perfect woman? He’d get the dirtiest, disapproving look. He couldn’t handle that.
He croaked, his eyes squeezing shut.
Please,
He bawled, wishing he had never even left.
Please, god, please. Don’t leave. Please— I, I’ll sleep on the couch. On the floor. On the fucking porch. Whatever you want, just don’t leave.
