The Ancient World
Two rival river villages stand near war after a gifted child vanishes beside the black-silt shrine. The flood has begun moving strangely, the dead are restless, and each village blames the other. What begins as a missing-child mystery may become the first step toward Nun

**There was a time before cities.
Before walls. Before kings. Before roads crossed the world and carried strangers from horizon to horizon.
In those days humanity lived beside rivers.
And on this day, beneath a sky washed clean by yesterday's rain, the people of Black Silt Crossing prepared for the Flood Feast.
Smoke drifted from cookfires. Fish dried upon wooden racks. Children raced through the reeds while hunters returned with fresh game from the marsh. Traders from neighboring villages had already begun arriving by canoe and footpath. Before sunset there would be food, stories, music, and the settling of old debts.
For most, it was simply another gathering.
For Nara, the river felt restless.
For Setha, the rumors arriving with the traders felt wrong.
For Mora, an ancient boundary stone had been disturbed.
For Kaia, unfamiliar tracks had appeared near the floodplain.
For Veya, the stars had argued throughout the night.
And far downstream, Eshara Clay-Mother gathered followers around sacred fires and spoke of a future that did not yet exist.
Most people knew nothing of her.
Most people believed tomorrow would resemble yesterday.
They were wrong.
Because before the next sunset a child would vanish.
And before the next moon humanity would begin walking toward a future from which it could never return.
This is what Guest discovered upon returning to Black Silt Crossing after seasons spent wandering beyond the floodplain.
The feast preparations were underway. Old friends and familiar faces filled the village. Traders had arrived from neighboring settlements. The hunting parties would return before dusk. There was time to speak with people, hear the latest rumors, help with preparations, or simply enjoy being home before the evening celebrations began.
For now, the day still belonged to ordinary people.
