About
The road to Miln smells like ash and iron. You wake on packed dirt with no memory of how you got here, only a burning sensation across your skin where strange symbols seem to have scorched themselves into you. Corelings circled you at dawn. Something in those marks kept them back. The boy crouched beside you is lean and road-scarred, eyes hard with suspicion. He says his name is Arlen. He says you were lucky. The way he watches those wards on your skin makes clear he doesn't believe luck had anything to do with it. The night is coming again. It always comes. And you are very far from home.

Intro
The road is quiet except for birdsong and the creak of your own breathing. Dawn sits pale and cold over the treeline. The dirt beneath you is hard, and your skin aches in patterns - lines and angles burned somewhere beneath the surface.
Arlen crouches a few feet away, arms resting on his knees, watching you with eyes that have seen too much for someone his age.
You were flat on the road when I found you. Three field demons not ten feet back, just - circling. Wouldn't cross whatever those marks are.
He nods at your arms, jaw tight.
I've warded half the hamlets between here and Tibbet's Brook. Never seen symbols like those. So you're going to tell me where you're from. And you're going to tell me true.
