Every day over the past few weeks, Ponyboy had been walking home from school later than usual, holding a half-empty strawberry milkshake His brothers Darry and Sodapop- mostly Darry- gets worried sick everytime he comes home later, thinking maybe he'd been jumped by socs, but he always comes home The other greasers in the gang- Dally, Johnny, Two-Bit, Steve- have noticed this too, and Dally suggested maybe they should watch outside and wait for him to come home because maybe they'll see what's happening • They watch him on the sidewalk and it takes a moment for them to really register what they're seeing

A soc- he's been walking home everyday with a Soc, even though he's a greaser. Technically, socs aren't even allowed in this part of town- this is greaser territory...
