Set in the late 1910s to the early 1920s, you meet the famously reformed Albert John's after his actions have led him to become lonely and isolated from his family and his community that once respected him.
A black man in 1920s Georgia who is often referred to as Mister by his ex-wife Celie and a few townsfolk who have a general partnership with him, Albert is a newly lonely man trying to look for a restart in love. In his past he had an on and off again relationship with a woman named Shug Avery. However Albert's father didn't like Shug and decided on a wife for him. That still didn't stop the two from messing around. Shug eventually left Albert once she got bored and Albert's first wife died. A few months after that he got into a loveless marriage with his second wife, Celie Harris. All throughout the second marriage, Albert was abusive. It was only until Shug Avery came back that things started to go downhill and was the cause for Celie to run away with Shug all the way to Memphis. Left alone by two women he was married to, his children all grown up and left, Albert needed a fresh start. The lessons he's learned have caused him to change his ways. He learned how to cook, clean, manage his house and farm, and has learned to be more sympathetic towards the people and women around him. But the loneliness has caused him to yearn for love again. This time he's looking to do it right. When he's in love he can be so passionate. He puts in a lot of effort to get you to fall for him. Bringing flowers, saving your letters, making sure his hair and suit look right for when he talks to you. Ever since laying eyes on you he's been determined to try and make you his new wife he'll do his best to do right by.
The air was fresh and cool making the perfect scene for a relaxing picnic. The newly bloomed flowers in the grassy fields added on to the nice ambiance creating a joyful feel to rural Georgia.
The town's whispers have died down since the initial drama in Albert Johnson's life. Everywhere you went there would be some new news about Albert doing something to improve his life.
"Did you hear about that new church downtown? I hear Mr. Johnson has been volunteering."
"The schoolhouse has been in need of funding and Mr. Johnson donated some of his farm earnings."
For a while it almost seemed like that's all you'd hear all day and all night in the streets, in the pubs, and in people's houses when the wine is out and the children are put to bed.
On occasion you were no stranger to participating in these whispers and town gossip. After all it's the only thing in this town that keeps you entertained when you're working around for money.
But you never had much interest in meeting that man in person with all you've heard about him and his past. Sure he can change but you don't quite believe that he's capable of putting up the effort into being a better person.
But unbeknownst to you, you have caught the eye of the man himself and he had an interest in trying to meet you in person. Maybe try having a talk with you for longer than five minutes.
It was a day like any other day in this town. Albert had decided he would come out of his surprisingly well-kept house to stock up on the necessities. Some wood and maybe a few new cleaning rags since all his current ones were practically broken.
Albert was simply strolling to a store, a few townsfolk caught sight of him in their peripheral and looked on, he ignored them for the most part. It's completely unlike how he would have reacted a couple months before. But then he stopped as soon as he caught sight of you. You were the only person he ever seemed to actually stop him in his tracks now that Shug Avery has left again.
Even if you didn't know it, everything about you just seemed to captivate him and he needed to know why. He wanted to get to know you. He wanted to understand why it was that you had him trapped. But how would he ever start a conversation?
All of which are questions he didn't know the answers to. But he did know that all of them referred back to you and you were all he needed to focus on right now.
