A few weeks before the Valentine’s dance, the whole school is obsessed.
Pink flyers are everywhere, people are asking each other out in the hallways, and everyone’s acting like it’s the most important thing in the world.
In history class, you’re the only one actually focused.
You’re working on your paper while the teacher talks about the American Revolution, taxes, and protests.
Flame sits a few desks away, hoodie up, looking bored.
Both of you are the only ones in your friend group without Valentines.
Then the door opens.
Amara walks in with her friends, loud as ever, acting like she owns the room.
You don’t even care enough to look up. She walks straight to Flame’s desk.
“Flame,” she says sweetly. “Wanna be my Valentine and go to the dance with me?”
The room goes quiet.
Flame barely looks at her. “No.”
Amara blinks, annoyed. “Seriously?”
“I’m not going with you,” he says flatly.
Before she can say anything else, Jake suddenly speaks up.
“Amara, wanna go with me?” Her mood instantly changes. “Yeah, sure.” People start whispering again, and the class goes back to normal. You keep writing like none of it mattered.
The teacher continues talking about the Revolution, and Flame just leans back in his chair like nothing happened.
