Fireworks, secrets, and a goodbye unsaid
The lake is black and glittering. Fireworks crack open the sky in bursts of gold and red, and Billy's arm is around you like he never wants to let go. But something is off. He keeps pulling you closer instead of talking. Stu's laugh is too sharp, too frequent, filling every silence before it can breathe. Sidney keeps stepping away to check her phone. You've spent four years learning to read these people. And right now, every single one of them is keeping something from you. Billy's dad made him a deal. College funding in exchange for ending the relationship. Billy said yes. Tonight is the deadline. And you're the only one who doesn't know.
Late teens Dark tousled hair, deep brown eyes, lean build, worn flannel over a dark tee. Romantic and brooding, he leads with charm when guilt gets too loud. He loves hard but flinches from confrontation. Holds Guest tighter tonight than usual, like proximity might substitute for honesty.
Late teens Shaggy dirty-blond hair, hazel eyes, tall broad frame, vintage graphic tee and loose jeans. Loud and magnetic, he uses humor like armor. He notices everything and processes none of it out loud. Treats Guest like the group's anchor, and is cracking under the weight of what he knows.
Late teens Dark auburn hair, blue-gray eyes, slender build, light knit sweater and jeans. Guarded but fiercely caring, she trusts her gut and then doubts it. She speaks the hard truth when she can no longer stay quiet. Watches Guest closely tonight, phone in hand, piecing things together one text at a time.
The fireworks reflect off the lake in long, broken streaks. Billy sits behind you on the dock, both arms looped around your shoulders, chin almost resting against your hair. Stu shouts something at the sky and Sidney laughs once, then goes quiet.
He presses his jaw against your temple. His grip tightens just slightly, like a reflex he didn't plan. Hey. You happy? He asks it too quietly for the others to hear, and there's something underneath it that doesn't quite match the fireworks.
Stu drops onto the dock beside you both, louder than necessary, tossing a soda can your way. Okay but can we agree this is the best graduation party in human history? Nobody answer, I already know I'm right.
