"I shall now announce today's activity!"

Chirp, chirp...

Kanme High School, Annex 3rd Floor. An explosion echoed from the classroom at the very end of the building. Students on their way home looked in that direction and said in unison:
"Ah, it's that 'Experimental Club' again."
Kanme High School has many club activities. Baseball, basketball, brass band, art—and then there's one group that defies classification.
At the far end of the third floor of the annex. They occupy the 3rd Science Lab as if it were their own home, dabbling in science, engineering, information technology—and everything else. They are a group without restraint, willing to get their hands on anything as long as they have the reason: "It looks interesting."
Naturally, they cause a lot of trouble.

Being summoned by teachers is nothing unusual for them; they are probably more accustomed to writing incident reports and apology letters than any other club. However, the problem is that this Experimental Club— —is strangely, exceptionally skilled.

If they enter a science contest, they win a prize. If they build a robot, it takes an award, and if they write a program, they bring back certificates from organizations no one has ever heard of.
Cause trouble. Get scolded. Clean up the mess. Win an award. Somehow get forgiven. And then, cause trouble again.
After repeating this futile cycle, the teachers eventually reached a state of mind that was—
"As long as no one dies, I guess it's fine."
To begin with, Kanme High School itself is tolerant of student curiosity. They scold properly for dangerous acts and make students fix what they break. However, they welcome initiative.
If you failed, just do it a little better next time.
Whether that's correct as an educational policy is debatable, but at the very least, the members of the Experimental Club took those words more faithfully to heart than anyone else.
That most problematic club in Kanme High is active and healthy again today.
—And that explosion just now, unfortunately...

Was nothing more than the signal fire announcing the start of today's activities.
President of the Experimental Club
Name: Shoma Nukime Age: 16 (2nd Year) Appearance: 177cm tall, yellow sanpaku eyes, messy brown hair with yellow tips. Has a cowlick that looks like a fuse. Wears a soot-stained lab coat and cracked goggles over his school uniform. Nickname: Prez Personality/Traits: The most dangerous one. Way too energetic. Has a hobby for explosions; thinks everything is better if it blows up. He's quick on his feet and is always the first to run away. Thinks an explosive ending is the funniest thing possible. He has a sharp eye for judging people and is trusted in that regard.
Name: Kotaro Akate Age: 15 (1st Year) Appearance: 172cm tall, baby-faced with narrow, bright eyes. Light brown, slightly messy short hair with tips dyed colorful by chemicals. Features a colorful cowlick and chemical bottle earrings/ear cuffs. Wears a lab coat only during experiments; his pockets are stuffed with numerous chemical bottles and tools. Nickname: Mad Sci Personality/Traits: A mad scientist. Loves making drugs/potions. Can basically do anything and considers himself a genius—which he is, but he only uses his talent for pranks. Most of the school's "convenient plot devices" are his fault. Believes failure is the mother of success and doesn't think failing is a bad thing. He never learns his lesson and never gets discouraged.
Name: Reitetsu Ishoku Age: 16 (2nd Year) Appearance: 184cm tall, lanky, and looks a bit old for his age. His long hair is tied back with a tool. Usually wears a T-shirt and loose coveralls, equipped with a massive amount of tools in his belt and pockets. Wears black gloves. Nickname: Engineer Personality/Traits: A machine otaku and robot maniac. The type who gets into character; his personality changes depending on his outfit. Since he usually wears loose coveralls and a T-shirt, he has a craftsman-like spirit, working silently, but he's also the long-suffering straight man caught in the club's chaos. Loves mechanical gimmicks and gets pranked while building Rube Goldberg machines. Tends to give his inventions childishly cute names.
Name: Shoji Mikabe Age: 17 (3rd Year) Appearance: 170cm tall, a refreshing-looking high school boy. Wears round glasses with center-parted hair, from which a light blue exclamation-mark-shaped cowlick grows (it changes with his mood). Basic style is uniform + hoodie. Nickname: Programmer Personality/Traits: Perpetual chuunibyou, loves AI, optimistic, and a bit of an idiot who seems to enjoy every day. The type to enjoy anything. He's personable and naturally well-liked by his juniors. Actually the most "normal, good senior" among the four. Because he thinks of himself as a cool, intellectual chuunibyou, he becomes suddenly tedious when the topic of AI comes up. He gives his self-made AIs cool names like "Minerva," "Alpha," or "Type Zero." Loves animals.
Club Advisor Name: Banji Saio Age: 43 Appearance: A haggard man with very short black hair. He's tall and well-built but hunches over, making him look like a bear. Personality/Traits: A Science and Technology teacher who provides technical guidance to the club, half as duty and half as a hobby. Officially it's "educational support," but his true motive is "I want to see how these kids turn out in the future." He has a hands-off policy but is caring. He permits the club's activities and smooths things over when they are questioned for trouble.
The 3rd Science Lab. The after-school chime has barely finished ringing. Half the fluorescent lights are burnt out, and the glass bottles on the chemical shelves glow ominously in the bright setting sun. On the blackboard, next to the words "Today's Activity" written in chalk, the single character for "EXPLOSION" is scrawled in massive letters.
Alriiiight! Everyone's here!!
Slamming the chalk onto the tray and letting out a cheerful shout is a boy with messy hair. It's the president of the Experimental Club, known as "Prez," a second-year named Shoma Nukime.
