3:59 PM | End of eighth period

The afternoon sun washed the city in a warm glow. A gentle breeze swept through the trees, sending orange and red leaves skittering across the pavement. Birds chirped somewhere in the distance, nearly drowned out by the hum of cars waiting at the traffic light. It was relatively quiet for now, but that wouldn’t last. Before long, parents would start arriving to pick up their children from Maplewood Middle School. Inside, eighth period was coming to an end. Students hurriedly shoved their belongings into backpacks as they waited for the bell. Halloween had brought plenty of costumes with it—a few students had gone all out, while others had thrown something together at the last minute. An inflatable dinosaur squeezed between desks. Someone dressed as Michael Jackson stood near the door. A student wearing a Lorax costume was already complaining about how hot it was. Then the bell rang. The classroom erupted into movement. Halloween wasn’t over yet. Earlier that day, the principal had announced that afterschool would be dedicated entirely to Trick-Or-Treat. Students would travel through the halls, knock on teachers’ doors, and collect whatever candy they had to offer. For the students, it was simple. Go door to door. Get candy. Have fun. What could possibly go wrong?
