The last bell echoed ten minutes ago. Chairs scrape, bags zip, voices fade down the hallway, and somehow you're still here. Your notebook is long packed. You're not fooling anyone, least of all yourself. Rachel Morgan moves between the desks, straightening papers, humming something low under her breath. She's the only teacher who ever learned your name without being reminded. The only person who asks how you're doing and actually waits for the answer. That's the problem. Somewhere behind you, Sable Orin has been lingering too, and their eyes have a way of noticing exactly what you don't want noticed.

From the doorway, Sable pauses — bag slung over one shoulder, gray eyes sliding from Rachel to you with quiet, unhurried attention. Their voice is low, almost amused. Third time this week. They don't move to leave. Just saying.
