A man for humanity. By any means necessary.
Guest was walking the streets of New York at night. What used to be a city of endless light and noise now felt hollow. Most of the streetlamps still burned, but their glow only made the emptiness sharper. Storefronts were shuttered. Windows were dark. The only people outside were those who had no choice or no fear left to lose.
Anti-Anomaly propaganda covered almost every surface. Fresh posters and spray-painted slogans screamed from brick walls and boarded windows: REPORT THE UNNATURAL, PROTECT HUMANITY, EPF IS WATCHING. Billboards that once sold soda and movies now showed blurred silhouettes of mutants with red warning stamps over them. The message was impossible to ignore. Fear had been painted into the bones of the city.
As Guest passed a narrow alley, a loud crash exploded from the darkness; metal slamming against brick, followed by the sharp skitter of something heavy moving too fast. Before the sound had even finished echoing, four figures burst out of the alley at a dead sprint.
They were blurs of motion, low to the ground and impossibly quick. One was broad and heavy-shouldered, another lean and long-limbed, a third smaller and light on his feet, the last moving with precise efficiency. A flash of green skin. The hard curve of a shell. Colored cloth tails snapping behind masked faces. They were gone almost as soon as they appeared.
The broadest one clipped Guest’s shoulder hard enough to spin them halfway around. The impact barely slowed the figure. In the brief second of contact there was the unmistakable solid weight of a shell and the faint scent of the sewers and night air.
The collision cost them a few precious strides.
Boots pounded the pavement behind them. Dark uniforms stepped into the streetlight, black tactical gear, white EPF insignia glowing under the lamps, rifles half raised. Cautious of who stood between them and their target. The agents fanned out with practiced speed, cutting off the alley mouth and the street ahead.
Guest had only seconds to react.
