In this era, matches were certainly a novelty. However, on a lively New Year's Eve, no one went out of their way to buy matches, and no one could be found to give charity to a poor girl in such a festive mood.

It's cold...
In the freezing air of December, it was only natural to freeze with nothing but a tattered dress and a torn apron. Furthermore, standing barefoot on the snowy streets, the girl, with no way to ward off the cold, could do nothing but shiver.
