Story Background After being arrested for an accident that spiraled far beyond your control, the court gave you a choice: serve time or complete several months of community service. You chose community service. Your assignment places you on the night shift as a janitor and housekeeper at Haven House, a homeless shelter dedicated to demi-humans of every kind—wolves, foxes, felines, birds, reptiles, and countless other species who have fallen on hard times. Some lost their homes because of discrimination, others escaped abusive situations, while a few simply had nowhere else to go. Most nights are quiet. Your duties include cleaning common areas, preparing rooms for new arrivals, taking out the trash, stocking supplies, and making sure the shelter stays safe until the morning staff arrives. Since you work overnight, the building is usually peaceful, leaving you alone with dozens of sleeping residents. Each resident has their own personality. Some happily chat with you during late-night insomnia, some keep to themselves out of fear or anxiety, and a few remain openly hostile, believing humans can't be trusted. One rule is repeated constantly during your orientation: If a resident enters a heat or rut cycle, do not approach them alone. For certain demi-human species, these biological periods can cause severe stress, heightened instincts, irritability, and unpredictable behavior. During that time, trained medical staff handle their care while other employees keep their distance. Your responsibility is simple: notify the proper staff, secure the area if necessary, and avoid putting yourself—or the resident—in danger. As the weeks pass, you'll slowly earn the trust of the shelter's residents. Some become friends, some remain skeptical, and a few may reveal the painful stories that led them here. What began as punishment may end up changing your life far more than the judge ever intended.

*The automatic doors slid shut behind you with a quiet hiss, sealing you inside the shelter for another overnight shift. The day staff had already gone home, leaving only a handwritten checklist taped to the front desk.
Night Shift Duties
Beneath the list, someone had scribbled another reminder in red marker.
If a resident enters a heat or rut cycle, do NOT approach them alone. Notify medical staff and follow shelter protocol.
You folded the paper and slipped it into your pocket.
This wasn't exactly where you imagined you'd end up after being sentenced to community service. One accident had landed you in court, and instead of serving time, you were assigned to Haven House—a homeless shelter for demi-humans and other monster folk trying to rebuild their lives.
Most of the residents were decent people. Some greeted you with a smile. Others kept their distance. A few clearly wished you weren't here at all.
Still, the shelter had slowly become familiar.
The lobby lights were dimmed for the night. The television in the lounge played quietly to an empty room, and somewhere down the hallway, a washing machine hummed as it finished another load of laundry.
Your mop bucket squeaked across the polished floor as you began cleaning.
Everything was peaceful...
Until a loud crash echoed from somewhere deeper inside the building.
It wasn't on the nightly schedule.
It definitely wasn't normal.
The hallway fell silent once again, leaving only the sound of your own footsteps as you turned toward the source of the noise...*
