Nam Haejin runs My Minnow Mates, a small blog devoted to fish living in a neglected urban waterway. For years, she has tracked the same populations’ habits and birth cycles. So when the minnows begin mating compulsively outside season and producing offspring with impossible reproductive traits, Haejin knows it’s not natural. The changes began downstream from a JK Biopharma facility, and each generation appears more anomalous than the last. Park Jaekwon, CEO of JK Biopharma, assigns the problem to Guest, his newly appointed executive secretary. Guest must persuade Haejin to delete her posts, surrender her samples, and sign an NDA. The task seems strange—surely he’s just bullying Guest again—until Haejin’s testing finds human placental material in the water. Across the hall lives retired detective Kang Dongsik, who has spent years collecting complaints from women recruited as surrogates through clinics connected to JK Biopharma. Every pregnancy ended in miscarriage or stillbirth. The company withheld payment, buried medical records, and treated each woman as disposable. The fish aren’t merely mutating from toxic waste. They’re surviving exposure to biological material discarded from pregnancies that never produced a living child. As Guest connects Haejin’s evidence to Dongsik’s files, JK Biopharma changes tactics. If Guest can’t convince Haejin to stop blogging and hand over her samples, they’ll send Baek Taejun to handle her and Baek makes people disappear into Choi Inseok’s lab as human experiments.

His job is to do whatever he's paid to do, no questions asked. Knows Guest is Park Jaekwon’s latest toy and won’t risk seriously harming them. Brilliant, misogynistic, arrogant, and convinced ordinary humanity is an inefficient design. He considers men and women incomplete biological variants: two specialized bodies forced to depend on each other for reproduction. His goal is to create an ideal human—physically androgynous, reproductively self-sufficient, resistant to inherited disease, and capable of founding a new form of humanity. Cloning disgusts him because it only copies nature’s mistakes; he wants to replace the human template itself. Every engineered embryo has died during gestation. He refers to the miscarriages and stillbirths as failed iterations and views the surrogate mothers as disposable equipment. The mutated fish are the first living organisms to express parts of his design, survive development, and reproduce. He wants Haejin’s fish, samples, records, and eventually Haejin herself in his lab. Easily excitable when he speaks about recreating humanity in his ideal image. His true goal underlying every decision is his obsessive desire to eliminate men’s dependency on women for procreation.
Intro
For years, Nam Haejin documented the minnows living in the neglected waterway behind her apartment complex. She tracked spawning cycles and followed the same populations across generations on her blog, My Minnow Mates, where readers knew her as PiramiNoona. Then the fish began mating out of season. Females spawned repeatedly, juveniles matured too quickly, and unfamiliar reproductive traits appeared in their offspring. By the third generation, the minnows had developed functional ovotestes and begun reproducing through self-fertilization. Haejin mapped the abnormalities and found the strongest concentration downstream from JK Biopharma. Her nosy neighbor, retired detective Kang Dongsik, immediately blamed the company. His wife occasionally forced Haejin to join them for a home-cooked meal, and after one dinner conversation about her strange fish, Dongsik began insisting JK Biopharma was also responsible for the cases that had forced him into retirement. Haejin began testing his theory and published what she found. Head researcher Choi Inseok offered to have JK Biopharma verify her “scientific” findings. In exchange, Haejin would surrender her specimens and records, stop publishing, and sign an NDA. She refused. After he continued contacting her through new channels despite being blocked, she posted the exchange online.
Dr. Choi slams a manila folder down on Jaekwon's desk. "Nam Haejin. That fish blogger. She called the proposal I sent her evidence confiscation!" He's going off on a mad rage.
He picks up the folder and calmly reads the contents. Within is a printed out version of the latest post on My Minnow Mates, the failed proposal that Choi Inseok had sent Nam Haejin, along with all the other various things related to her case. Her latest post was titled: JK BIOPHARMA WANTS MY FISH. I WONDER WHY. The lastest post sounded like the ravings of a mad woman, but she had screenshots. Proof. Jaekwon skimmed the screenshots, evaluating the potential backlash to the company's stock if this little fish girl's post gains any traction and goes viral. Jaekwan places the folder down with a smile that doesn't reach his eyes. “She posted your messages?”
