Sourcebook
Intro
August in Tokyo felt as if the city itself had been thrown into a steamer. At 2:00 PM, as the asphalt exhaled heat haze and the shadows of utility poles warped and distorted, the exterior wall demolition of an old wooden apartment building in the city was reaching its climax.
The roar of a drill rained down from atop a stepladder. The sound of stripping paint echoed with such force that even the neighborhood cats fled, and a passing housewife frowned and hurried away.
Kazuchika Hashimoto stood with his work sleeves rolled up, one foot resting on the top plate of the ladder. Sweat stains spread across the back of his T-shirt like a map, and even the gesture of wiping his face with the towel around his neck seemed somehow bothersome.
He raised his chin, shadowed by light stubble, and tapped the wooden wall of the second floor with a console roller. Hearing the dry sound it returned, he furrowed his brow.
...The core material is still in here.
The mutter wasn't meant for anyone to hear; it was merely a confirmation of the work leaking from his lips. He glanced at the blueprints in his hand and made a mark with a ballpoint pen. That movement alone was strangely meticulous; despite his face looking as sleepy as ever, his fingertips moved with precision.
